A Surprise Weekend Away

My hubby recently surprised me with a weekend getaway up to the North Shore of Minnesota. It was such an unexpected surprise, especially at this time of year!
Here’s how it went down!
My alarm went off at 5:30 AM on Friday as it does every weekday, and as I started to get up and get ready for work, Mike tells me he has a secret! He then tells me I am NOT going to work, and that we are leaving in a few hours to go up north. He pulls out a series of emails between he and my manager, where he had lined up the whole thing! My manager was totally in on it! He had even had a fake meeting scheduled for Friday morning to throw me off!
Needless to say, I was very surprised and super pumped! We got the kids off to school, packed up and drove about 3 1/2 hours north to Cove Point Lodge.
It’s been unseasonably warm in MN, so there was not much snow at all, but that was fine with me!
Here are some pictures from our weekend! Just a disclaimer….these were all taken on my phone and some are less than stellar. Sorry!
Had to stop and pick up some smoked cheese and salmon!
These 2 HUGE Adirondack chairs greet you at the entrance to Cove Point.
The view from our room…
Mike had prime rib for dinner one night – one of his faves!
I had a chicken breast with a jarlsberg cream and lingonberries, wild rice and glazed carrots. It was DELICIOUS!!!
We even got a game of cribbage in! (I won….just sayin’, lol!)
Saturday for lunch we ate at the Rustic Inn in Two Harbors. Another amazing meal! They make their own potato chips and they were the best chips I have EVER had.
We might have bought some homemade chocolates to sample….
One our way home, we stopped by our old college stomping grounds and walked around campus. It had been a few years since we’d been there and it’s always fun to go back!
Did a little Christmas shopping…loved this firepit set up outside of Duluth Pack, one of my favorite stores.
Ate lunch at one of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants, Taste of Saigon.
And then visited the chocolate shop across the way for some dessert and little sweet gifts for the kids.
This was our view almost the whole way home….the fog was CRAZY.
All in all, it was a fabulous weekend and just what we needed. I didn’t even stress out (too) much about not being able to get more Christmas shopping done. :)
Now, I’ll need to come up with a plan to surprise him back. ;)
