North Shore Getaway

My hubby and I recently decided to get away up north for a few days to relax and unwind. We left on Sunday and it was a beautiful drive up the North Shore! It is only about a 2 1/2 hour drive, and I love being on Lake Superior. We drive through Duluth, which has special meaning since we both went to college there (go Bulldogs!).
We made a stop at Russ Kendall’s for some smoked salmon. Not a favorite of mine, but Mike loves it!
We also wound up with some smoked swiss cheese, which was so good!
Our destination was Larsmont Cottages, which are right on Lake Superior. It was our first time staying there, although we had eaten at the restaurant before and I’d made a mental note at that time to come back and stay in one of their cottages.
Since it was just the 2 of us, we got a one bedroom suite, and it was so cute! I loved the lodge-like feel and it was nice and cozy – perfect for the fall!
The picture of this shower doesn’t do it justice. It was HUGE!! 10 people could fit in there!
Our view from the balcony….
Aren’t the cottages cute? There was a massage cottage too, but we didn’t visit it. This time. :)
One morning for breakfast, we went into Two Harbors and had breakfast at the Vanilla Bean Cafe. Check out the omelette I had! It was as big as the plate and had fresh spinach, tomatoes and smoked gouda in it. Wow, it was so good!
Most of the days were fairly windy, especially near the lake, but we did get out for a (short) walk without freezing TOO bad!
One our way home, we wanted to spend a little extra time in Duluth, and as we drove into town, we could see that a ship was coming in. See it there in the distance? When we were in college, we would sometimes head down to Canal Park with our friends and watch the ships come in or out, so it was perfect timing!!
Lift bridge up and waiting!
See that building behind us? That is where we got engaged! 16 years ago!
These ships are SO big!
We finished off the trip with lunch at Taste of Saigon, which is our most favorite Vietnamese place ever! It was always a special treat during those college years to scrounge together money to make a trip down there.
If you’ve ever been to the North Shore of Minnesota – where do you like to stay and eat? Do you make a point to get away for “date weekends”?
