Summer Family Traditions

Before I get into today’s post, be sure to check out the review and giveaway that Lois did over at The Minister’s Wife. Wait until you see the before and after pictures of her wall!
Now, onto today’s post – it’s a long one! :)
Do you have a happy place? My happy place happens to be about 5 hours north of where we live, near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. It’s called Camp du Nord and it’s been a family tradition of ours for 30 years! Camp du Nord is a YMCA family camp that I have seen grown so much over the last 30 years. When we first started going, it was about 1/3 of the size, and there really wasn’t any bathrooms to speak of…just outdoor biffies. It’s had to adapt over the years and now you can rough it if you want to or stay in a cabin with most of the comforts of home!
I started going when I was 6, and now I go with my own kids! They love it as much as I do and talk all year round about how they can’t wait to go.
It’s one of those family traditions that I can’t imagine NOT doing.
This year we shared this beautiful log cabin with my parents. My youngest sister, Caitlin, and her fiancé, Hart, were able to come up for about 1/2 the week, and my cousin Jamie even came to visit with a couple of days!
This was the view from the front porch – so pretty! There is a volleyball and tetherball court off to the left where the boys spent quite a bit of time!
Here are Devin and Kaden before heading off to Polar Bear one morning. If you aren’t familiar with Polar Bear, a bunch of crazy people (can you tell I don’t participate) meet down at the beach at 7:45 AM , sing a song, and run into the water.
This is my sister Caitlin and I. Isn’t she a cutie? She’s a NICU nurse at a Children’s Hospital and just got engaged last month! We are about 12 years apart!
The boys were so excited to do some fishing! Um, I mean, “fishin’”!
This particular night we sat out on a sloping rock, sang and watched the sun start to set while the boys fished.
Devin caught a pretty good one!
Lots of fishing poles in the water! That’s my sister’s husband-to-be, Hart, in front there. Oh my, the boys love him and can’t wait for him to be their uncle! My mom and I were so nervous about everyone casting so close together, but of course it didn’t seem to faze anyone but us. :)
Kaden tried his hand at kayaking, which he really enjoyed.
Mainly he just wanted to swamp it though!
He had more fun tipping over than actually paddling – lol!
Here’s the engaged couple – they were so cute!
Ahh…canoes. I was so bummed, but this year I didn’t go paddling once! I injured my shoulder right before we left for the week and there was no way I would’ve been able to paddle.
Every morning, the kids are in Age Group….which means they are with a counselor and kids their own age for 2 1/2 hours. They do all kinds of activities like hiking, games, beach day, arts & crafts, etc. They have a lot of fun and it gives us parents a nice break!
One day during age group, my mom and I went for a walk over to the other side of camp. I took a few photos along the way:
Another great thing about our week at camp is that you can do as much or as little as you want. There are ALWAYS activities going on, and you just pick and choose what interests you!
One afternoon Devin decided to learn how to start a matchless fire…it’s tricky! He tried for a long with that flint and steel…
…and finally got it going!
He also wanted to try paddle-boarding for the first time. It was so fun to watch him!
Here we have some brotherly love. :) They actually got along really well doing the week, and it’s nice to see them interact and have fun WITHOUT the computer, TV, etc.
Here we are before we left for home…sad to leave, but happy that we get to go back next year!
